Gert Schuitemaker
Dr. Gert E. Schuitemaker introduced orthomolecular medicine to the Netherlands in 1983. During his course of studies for pharmacist, he became interested in this new branch of medical science, as defined in 1968 by two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling in the magazine Science (1968; 160:265-271). Schuitemaker is of the opinion that above all in the case of chronic disease, in the first instance, an assessment should be made of the extent to which nutrition and nutrients in the optimum dosage can help the patient, before medicines or other medical treatments are employed.Gert Schuitemaker is president of the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine (ISOM, based in Toronto). He is founder and former chairman of the professional organisation the Society for the Promotion of Orthomolecular Medicine (MBOG).
In 2004 he obtained his doctoral thesis in Medicine at the University of Maastricht on the basis of a population survey for risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.
